CircaTest note: The most comprehensive recent meta-analysis of consumer wrist-worn sleep trackers vs PSG: 24 studies, 798 patients, 12 different brands including Fitbit, WHOOP, Garmin, Apple Watch, Empatica E4, and Xiaomi Mi Band 5. Headline finding is that across the entire device set, consumer wrist trackers UNDERESTIMATE total sleep time by ~17 minutes (95% CI -26 to -7) and UNDERESTIMATE sleep efficiency by ~4.7 percentage points, both statistically significant. This is the strongest published quantitative answer to the question 'how wrong are consumer trackers on average' across the wrist-worn category. Important limit: pooled across brands, no per-device breakdown extracted into this record.

CircaTest note: The most directly relevant published validation for any Xiaomi Mi Band generation. Tests the Mi Band 5 (released 2020) against PSG in a clinical population. The 78% accuracy / 89% sensitivity / 35% specificity / kappa 0.22 figures should NOT be extrapolated to the Smart Band 9 because the underlying sensor (BioTracker generation, processing algorithms) has changed. CircaTest cites this as the only published peer-reviewed Xiaomi-family validation, with the explicit caveat that newer generations require their own validation.

Data Sources and Methodology
This review compiles data from Xiaomi's official Smart Band 9 specifications page (mi.com/global/product/xiaomi-smart-band-9/specs/, verified April 6, 2026). No first-person testing was conducted.
Important caveat upfront: no peer-reviewed PSG validation specific to the Xiaomi Smart Band 9 has been published. The earlier Mi Band 5 was validated against PSG in a clinical population by Concheiro-Moscoso et al., 2023 (78% accuracy, 89% sensitivity, 35% specificity, kappa 0.22) and included in the 24-study consumer wrist tracker meta-analysis by Lee et al., 2025, but the sensor hardware and algorithms differ across Mi Band generations. CircaTest does not extrapolate those Mi Band 5 figures to the Band 9.
Sensor Suite
Per Xiaomi's official specifications page, the Smart Band 9 contains a comparatively small sensor set for its budget price point:
- Optical heart rate sensor (PPG)
- Accelerometer
- Gyroscope
- Ambient light sensor
- Blood oxygen (SpO2) derived from the PPG array
There is no skin temperature sensor, no ECG, no on-device GPS (connected GPS via paired phone is supported). For a $50 device, this is competitive with what Fitbit and Garmin offer at much higher price points for their entry-level bands.
Sleep Tracking Features
Xiaomi describes the Smart Band 9 as offering sleep stage tracking with light, deep, and REM stage classification. Per Xiaomi's product documentation, REM monitoring must be explicitly enabled in the Mi Fitness app for high-precision sleep tracking. The band also tracks blood oxygen and heart rate during sleep and provides sleep advice via the companion app.
No peer-reviewed validation specific to the Smart Band 9 has been published. Independent reviews suggest the band's sleep tracking is in the same general ballpark as other consumer wrist trackers, but CircaTest does not assert specific accuracy figures without published evidence.
